Introduction: What is the ISEB 11+ Pre-Test?

The ISEB 11+ Common Pre-Test is a computer-based, multiple-choice assessment used by over 50 leading UK independent schools. Run by the Independent Schools Examinations Board (ISEB), it provides a standardised measure of attainment and potential.

  • Who takes it? Pupils in Year 6 (age 10–11), occasionally Year
  1. - Why? To shortlist applicants for interviews, written exams, or conditional offers.
  • When? Once per academic year, between September and June.
  • Where? Usually at the pupil’s current prep school or the senior school applied to.

⚠️ Note: The ISEB Pre-Test ≠ Common Entrance (CE). Pre-Test is sat earlier (Year 6/7); CE is later (Year 8, for 13+ entry).

Exam Structure and Subjects

The Pre-Test has four adaptive, multiple-choice modules.

Non-Verbal Reasoning Pattern recognition, symmetry, spatial awareness, visual sequences, 2D/3D diagrams ~32 mins

  • Total duration: ~2 hrs 20–30 mins.
  • Adaptive format: Correct answers → harder next questions; mistakes → easier ones.

  • On-screen countdown timer.
  • Font/colour settings for accessibility.
  • Auto-submission when time ends.

Scoring and Standardisation

  • Raw scores are converted into a Standardised Age Score (SAS).
  • SAS adjusts for the child’s age in months.
  • Average SAS:
  1. - Typical range: 85–
  2. - 120+: Very strong, top percentile.

📌 Results are sent directly to senior schools. Parents usually do not see them.
